Main Tasks & Responsibilities
• Manage, maintain, configure, and support Microsoft SQL Server environments across on-premises VMware and Microsoft Azure.
• Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and maintain SQL Server instances and databases.
• Monitor database health, availability, performance, capacity, overnight jobs, alerts, and production workloads.
• Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve complex database incidents and performance issues.
• Develop, review, troubleshoot, and optimise T-SQL queries, stored procedures, and indexes.
• Manage database backup, restore, security, access controls, and High Availability / Disaster Recovery processes.
• Support and maintain HA/DR technologies including Always On Availability Groups, Failover Cluster Instances, log shipping, geo-replication, and backup/restore testing.
• Act as a technical escalation point for database-related incidents and collaborate with vendors when required.
• Manage incidents, service requests, and operational activities through ITSM processes.
• Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and contribute to post-incident reviews and problem management.
• Plan, document, present, and implement database changes through established Change Management and CAB processes.
• Automate repetitive database administration and operational activities using PowerShell, dbatools, T-SQL, SQL Agent / Elastic Jobs, Python, and Azure DevOps pipelines.
• Build operational runbooks and automated remediation for recurring database alerts.
• Support database CI/CD and release validation using technologies such as Redgate, SSDT, and Azure DevOps.
• Support project activities involving database migrations, Azure workloads, ETL, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Synapse where required.
• Contribute to database architecture decisions regarding reliability, security, performance, and cost optimisation.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation, operational procedures, runbooks, and configuration records.
• Ensure database environments comply with security, least-privilege, encryption, auditing, GDPR, PII, and data protection requirements.
Requirements
• Strong professional experience as a Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator.
• Strong hands-on experience with SQL Server administration, configuration, maintenance, and performance tuning.
• Experience managing SQL Server environments hosted on VMware.
• Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure database environments, including Azure SQL and/or SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines.
• Strong experience with High Availability and Disaster Recovery technologies, including:
• Always On Availability Groups
• Failover Cluster Instances
• Log Shipping
• Geo-Replication
• Backup & Restore
• Strong T-SQL knowledge, including development and optimisation of stored procedures and queries.
• Experience with database performance analysis, indexing, troubleshooting, and optimisation.
• Scripting and automation experience using technologies such as:
• PowerShell
• dbatools
• T-SQL
• Python
• Experience with IT Service Management processes, including:
• Incident Management
• Problem Management
• Service Requests
• Change Management
• CAB
• Experience performing Root Cause Analysis and post-incident reviews.
• Experience with Azure DevOps Boards and/or similar task and delivery management tools.
• Good knowledge of database security, access control, auditing, encryption, and least-privilege principles.
• Experience handling sensitive and PII data in line with data protection requirements.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Strong documentation and communication skills.
• Ability to operate autonomously within technically complex enterprise environments.
• Fluent English is mandatory.

• Relevant certifications such as:
• Microsoft Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300)
• Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)

• ITIL Foundation
• SRE Foundation
