Principal OpenShift / Kubernetes Networking Architect

I'm recruiting for highly experienced OpenShift / Kubernetes Networking Architect to take ownership of networking architecture across a large-scale container and virtualisation platform.
This is a senior, hands-on architecture position focused on designing secure, scalable networking for OpenShift Container Platform and OpenShift Virtualisation environments. The successful candidate will shape the target-state architecture, establish networking and security standards, and provide technical direction to engineering and implementation teams.
A key area of focus will be the evolution from traditional VMware NSX-based networking and security models towards modern, OpenShift-native approaches. This will include assessing existing firewall and segmentation requirements and developing appropriate Kubernetes-native solutions for both containerised and virtual machine workloads.
The role would suit someone who combines deep Kubernetes networking expertise with strong architectural capability and the ability to operate at both strategic and technical levels.
Key Responsibilities
- Define the target networking architecture for OpenShift and OpenShift Virtualisation platforms
- Develop scalable approaches to network segmentation, isolation, connectivity and multi-tenancy
- Lead the transition from legacy NSX-based security and segmentation towards OpenShift-native solutions
- Review and rationalise existing NSX firewall and micro-segmentation requirements
- Define appropriate Kubernetes-native policy and segmentation models
- Establish networking standards, patterns and reference architectures
- Provide technical leadership to platform and engineering teams
- Assess emerging Kubernetes networking and CNI technologies
- Support the design of secure networking for both container and VM workloads
- Develop architecture documentation, HLDs, LLDs and implementation standards
- Provide technical governance across platform networking and security
Required Experience
- 10+ years' experience across enterprise networking and infrastructure
- 5+ years' hands-on experience with Kubernetes networking
- Strong commercial experience working with Red Hat OpenShift in complex enterprise environments
- Expert-level knowledge of OVN-Kubernetes
- Strong understanding of Kubernetes networking, including Services, Ingress, Egress and Network Policies
- Practical experience with Multus and secondary networking
- Strong knowledge of namespace isolation, multi-tenancy and Kubernetes micro-segmentation
- Experience translating VMware NSX firewall and segmentation policies into Kubernetes-native security models
- Experience with OpenShift Network Policies and/or Admin Network Policies
- Exposure to technologies such as Cilium, Calico, UDN/CUDN or equivalent
- Strong understanding of network security considerations when moving from VM-centric to container-native architectures
- Experience designing or implementing Zero Trust networking
- Hands-on knowledge of OpenShift Virtualisation / KubeVirt networking
- Experience assessing CNI/SDN platforms and making architecture recommendations
- Ability to produce high-quality HLDs, LLDs, reference architectures and technical standards
- Strong communication, stakeholder management and technical leadership capabilities
Red Hat OpenShift certification or recognised Kubernetes networking certification would be advantageous.
