Senior Back-end Java Engineer | Distributed Systems | Malmö
We are looking for an experienced Back-end Java Engineer to build and operate large-scale, privacy-critical services used by millions of users globally. This is a technically deep role focused on Java, distributed systems, scalability, reliability, performance and security with full end-to-end service ownership.
Location: Malmö, Sweden
Work model: 100% onsite, 5 days/week
Availability: Evening meetings approx. 2x/week
Assignment: 6 months + extensions
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build and operate high-scale Java backend services.
- Own services from architecture and development through production operations.
- Improve performance, reliability, availability and security.
- Troubleshoot complex issues involving concurrency, load and distributed systems.
- Build and improve APIs, frameworks and reusable backend capabilities.
- Collaborate across engineering teams and manage technical dependencies.
- Drive improvements in architecture, automation, testing and CI/CD.
Key Requirements
- 5+ years of strong production backend engineering experience.
- Deep Java expertise, including memory model, garbage collection and allocation pressure.
- Strong concurrency knowledge including java.util.concurrent, virtual threads and/or reactive models.
- Experience building and scaling customer-facing web services.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, consistency, partitioning and failure modes.
- Experience with Cassandra, Redis, memcached or similar technologies.
- Experience developing REST services using Netty or similar frameworks.
- Strong knowledge of authentication, authorization, performance and reliability.
- CI/CD and automated testing experience.
Nice to Have
- Cryptography including PKCS, KMIP, X.509, AES, KDF or CA.
- Privacy-preserving or security-critical platforms and key management.
- Kubernetes, Docker, GitHub, Maven and Spinnaker.
- ML systems, frameworks or algorithms.
