# Senior Software Engineer - Application
**Location:** Fully Remote (US-based)
**Reports to:** VP of Engineering / Director of Engineering
## The Opportunity
Most startups burn cash to find a market, at Symmetric, we've spent the last few years winning it. We've been profitable from Year 1, remain employee-owned and doubled in 2025 with line of sight to repeat that growth in 2026.
Our product is the data engine behind the world's most sophisticated healthcare systems — 17 of the Gartner Top 25 supply chains already rely on Symmetric. We provide cutting-edge solutions that streamline procurement, item master data management, and improve efficiency across healthcare systems.
We have a fully remote team that's making a big impact on the healthcare supply chain by working closely with enterprises (health systems, hospitals, consulting firms, etc.), regulatory agencies and industry groups.
## Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Application to design and build the workflows, user experiences, and intelligent automations that power Symmetric's web application. As a full stack engineer, you will own features end-to-end — from database schema and backend services through to the React interfaces our customers interact with every day.
You will also play a central role in embedding Agentic AI automations into our product, and in building the monitoring and auditing capabilities that give our customers confidence in the integrity of their data. This is a high-impact individual contributor role for someone who enjoys shipping polished application features, solving complex product problems, and working across the stack to deliver durable, scalable software.
## Key Responsibilities
### Application Development & Workflows
- Design and develop workflows within the web application that enable customers to efficiently manage procurement, item master data, and supply chain operations.
- Build full stack features spanning Python and SQL on the backend, TypeScript and React on the frontend, with selective use of Rust for performance-critical components.
- Translate ambiguous product requirements into clean, maintainable software that balances short-term delivery with long-term extensibility.
### Agentic AI & Automation
- Implement Agentic AI automations that reduce manual work for our customers and unlock new product capabilities across the platform.
- Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to identify high-leverage opportunities for AI-driven workflows and prototype, evaluate, and productionize them.
- Design guardrails, evaluations, and observability for AI features so they remain reliable, safe, and explainable in enterprise healthcare environments.
### Monitoring, Auditing & Data Integrity
- Build capabilities that monitor and audit user actions and data changes within the application, giving customers clear visibility into who did what, when, and why.
- Contribute to application-level security, access controls, and compliance features appropriate for customers operating in regulated healthcare environments.
- Own feature reliability end-to-end: monitoring, alerting, error handling, and performance of the services and UIs you build.
### Collaboration & Leadership
- Partner with Product Management, Design, Data Engineering, and Customer Success to deliver features aligned with the product roadmap and customer commitments.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team best practices around code quality, testing, and documentation.
- Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, and technical planning sessions.
## Qualifications
### Required
- 4+ years of experience as a full stack software engineer building and operating production web applications.
- Strong proficiency in Python and SQL for application backends, including schema design and performance tuning.
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript and React for building modern, responsive web interfaces.
- Experience designing and implementing application workflows, with a strong eye for usability and maintainability.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
### Preferred
- Experience writing Rust, particularly for performance-sensitive services, data processing, or shared libraries.
- Experience building Agentic AI features, LLM-powered workflows, or other applied AI automations in a production setting.
- Experience implementing auditing, activity logging, or change-tracking capabilities in enterprise applications.
- Experience on AWS (S3, Lambda, ECS, RDS, or equivalent) and with modern CI/CD practices.
- Experience with healthcare IT, supply chain technology, or enterprise SaaS.
## What Success Looks Like
- **30 days:** Solid understanding of our application architecture, core workflows, and AI and auditing capabilities; built relationships with cross-functional partners in Engineering, Product, and Design.
- **60 days:** Independently shipping application features across the stack and contributing to code reviews and architectural discussions.
- **90 days:** Delivered a meaningful workflow, Agentic AI automation, or auditing capability that measurably improves customer outcomes; established as a go-to technical resource on the application team.
- **1 year:** Driven significant evolution of our application platform and AI capabilities; mentored teammates; played a key role in shaping the technical strategy for how Symmetric's product evolves.
