Position: Simulation Engineer
Location: Zurich area
Activity rate: 100%
Start date: As soon as possible
Your main responsibilities:
Our client, a major player in Swiss air navigation services, is looking for a Simulation Engineer to keep the complex simulation environments used by air traffic controllers and instructors reliable and ready for training. You will integrate applications and systems, automate practical tasks, assemble and deploy simulation baselines, and verify that the complete environment works as intended.
The environment brings together operational ATC systems, situation generators, emulated components, internally developed applications and supplier products, with both legacy and newer technologies. Development accounts for approximately 5–10% of the workload; most of the work involves scripting, integration, configuration, testing and technical support.
You will be responsible for:
Integration and deployment
- Integrating new and changed systems into the simulation environment, working with project teams to understand interfaces, dependencies and configuration needs.
- Creating and maintaining simulation baselines: consistent packages of application versions, configuration and data required to run a defined environment.
- Distributing and deploying baselines, preparing environments for training activities and checking that applications and connected systems operate together.
- Writing and maintaining scripts to automate configuration, deployment, verification and recurring operational tasks.
Testing, validation and support
- Performing integration testing and technical validation; recording defects, investigating causes and coordinating corrective actions.
- Supporting operational validation by controllers and instructors, preparing technically ready environments and resolving issues identified during exercises.
- Providing technical support beyond the first-line hotline, diagnosing application, configuration, interface and data-flow problems with the responsible specialist teams.
- Investigating exchanges between systems, including network-level behaviour and aviation data interfaces.
Maintenance and coordination
- Making limited software changes and maintenance contributions when required, and maintaining clear technical documentation and handover information.
- Coordinating assigned technical activities, communicating dependencies and risks, and contributing to planning and delivery within the team.
- Following internal quality, safety and change-control processes, and helping colleagues maintain continuity during organisational and technical change.
Required skills:
- You have substantial experience working with complex, interconnected technical systems (around 5–10 years as a guide; depth and relevance matter more than a fixed threshold).
- You have practical scripting and automation skills, with evidence of improving deployment, configuration, testing or support tasks.
- You have hands-on application or systems integration experience, including configuration management, release preparation and troubleshooting across interfaces.
- You have experience validating changes and preparing reliable environments for users, with a structured approach to defects and technical evidence.
- You have a software engineering foundation that enables you to understand application behaviour, investigate problems and contribute small changes.
- Experience in air traffic control, air traffic management or controller-training simulation is an asset.
- Knowledge of Linux/Unix, networking and the analysis of data exchanges between distributed applications is an asset.
- Experience with Java and integration technologies such as Spring or Apache Camel is an asset.
- Experience with deployment and configuration automation using Puppet, Ansible or comparable tools is an asset.
- Knowledge of aviation messaging, surveillance or flight-data interfaces, supplier systems and legacy integration is an asset.
Your profile:
- You enjoy making complete systems work, tracing difficult faults and preparing dependable environments for operational users.
- You are motivated by a varied, hands-on role in which coding is one part of a broader responsibility.
- You have an interest in operational reliability and are willing to work with established technologies as well as newer components.
- You communicate clearly, show sound judgement and share knowledge within the team.
- You are comfortable working constructively through organisational change while maintaining reliable delivery.
- You are interested in a long-term contribution, as learning the simulation environment requires a significant investment.
