About The Role
As a Senior Data Engineer at Starbucks, you will play a pivotal role in building and maintaining enterprise data services that support advanced analytics and strategic decision-making. Your responsibilities will include designing, developing, testing, and supporting robust data pipelines that facilitate continuous data processing for exploration, preparation, and real-time business insights. This role requires a strong technical background, as you will translate strategic business needs into scalable technical solutions by collaborating across multiple teams. You will ensure data governance, improve standards for data quality and reliability, and drive operational excellence through automation, monitoring, and documentation. Your work will directly impact Starbucks' ability to leverage big data for competitive advantage, customer personalization, and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related discipline
- 2+ years of professional industry experience in software development
- Proficiency in SQL platforms (5+ years preferred)
- Experience with NoSQL platforms (2+ years preferred)
- Hands-on experience with Spark and/or Hadoop ecosystem (5+ years preferred)
- Experience implementing data platforms on cloud services such as Azure or AWS (1+ years preferred)
- Knowledge of CI/CD tools and practices (1+ years preferred)
- Exposure to SOA architecture and service integration patterns (2+ years preferred)
- Proficiency in Java, Scala, or C#, with strong debugging and performance tuning skills
- Experience with shell scripting, logging, monitoring, and enterprise deployment best practices
- Experience in productionalizing big data implementations
- Familiarity with Tableau or similar visualization tools (a plus)
- Ability to mentor team members and operate effectively within Agile/DevOps environments
Responsibilities
- Build and support highly available data pipelines across batch, distributed, and real-time processing systems to enable large-scale analytics.
- Translate strategic business requirements into technical solutions by collaborating with cross-functional teams to define data needs, implement governance, and establish data retention standards.
- Enhance data platform reliability and performance through automation, continuous monitoring, comprehensive documentation, and root-cause analysis.
- Partner with support groups and vendors to resolve technical issues, optimize data workflows, and ensure data quality and security.
- Implement scalable data models and pipelines that support data exploration, reporting, and real-time analytics.
- Stay current with emerging data engineering technologies and incorporate best practices into existing systems.
- Mentor junior team members and promote knowledge sharing within the data engineering team.
- Participate in Agile development cycles, contributing to sprint planning, reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
