The Role
This is a Senior Full Stack Developer role sitting within the Buying & Merchandising Dev team — one of a number of small, focused squads across the wider development function, each owning a distinct set of applications and working Kanban-style. The team builds and maintains the systems that power range planning, stock purchasing decisions, pricing and promotions, and sales/stock/intake analysis — genuinely commercial, decision-driving systems rather than peripheral tooling. The stack is C#, SQL Server, React and TypeScript across a mix of monolithic and microservices architecture, with a good split of green-field build and legacy evolution. It's a strong fit for someone who wants ownership and technical influence rather than just ticket delivery — the team leans on code review, pair programming and strong test coverage, and there's real scope to shape technical direction, mentor junior engineers, and get involved in project scoping.
The Brand
This is one of the UK's largest outdoor lifestyle retailers — a well-established, multi-hundred-store business with a strong international footprint across the UK, US, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, serving several million customers a year. It designs and produces the majority of its own product range in-house, which gives its technology teams genuine end-to-end visibility — from range planning through to the point of sale — rather than sitting downstream of decisions made elsewhere. The business has been actively investing in its digital foundations, including a recent move to a modern, composable ecommerce platform to support continued global growth, and it's a business that moves fast, values ideas from wherever they come, and gives people real room to get stuck into projects beyond their day-to-day remit.
The Person
We're looking for someone with at least 6 years' commercial experience across C#, SQL, EF Core and JavaScript/TypeScript to an advanced level, plus a minimum of 4 years' commercial React (or equivalent framework) experience, ideally with some exposure to distributed systems and message brokers such as RabbitMQ or Azure Service Bus. Just as important is the way they work: someone who gets to a working result quickly and iterates from feedback rather than over-engineering upfront, communicates clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and is comfortable making pragmatic calls — including knowing when to fail fast and change direction. Retail experience is a nice-to-have rather than a must, but any background coaching or mentoring junior developers, or getting involved in technical scoping and planning, would make someone stand out.
