Senior Data Engineer (Azure Synapse & Databricks)

Location: Utrecht (Hybrid)

Contract: 12-month contract with potential extension

Hours: 40 hours per week

Language: Fluent Dutch and English required

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to help develop and enhance enterprise-scale data products that deliver trusted business insights. You will play a key role in maintaining existing Azure-based data platforms while supporting the transition to a modern Databricks Lakehouse environment.

Working within a multidisciplinary Agile team, you will collaborate with architects, business analysts, product owners, and fellow engineers to build scalable, reliable, and future-ready data solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize data pipelines using Azure Synapse and Databricks.
• Build and maintain scalable ELT/ETL frameworks and reusable data components.
• Develop APIs and data products to enable reliable access to business data.
• Enhance data quality, performance, monitoring, and operational excellence.
• Support platform modernization and migration initiatives.
• Participate in technical design, architecture discussions, and solution development.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Drive improvements in DevOps practices, CI/CD processes, and testing standards.

Required Skills & Experience

• 5+ years of Data Engineering experience.
• Strong experience with Azure Synapse Analytics.
• Hands-on experience with Azure Databricks and Lakehouse architectures.
• Strong Python, SQL, and PySpark skills.
• Experience designing and implementing ELT/ETL pipelines.
• Knowledge of data modelling and data warehousing.
• Experience working within Azure cloud environments.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable Experience

• Medallion Architecture.
• Delta Lake and Unity Catalog.
• Data platform migration projects.
• REST API development and integrations.
• Large enterprise data environments.
• Financial services or banking sector experience.
